There was no choice

about it–improbable

degrees of maybe,

no way the many why’s

could definitely mean

what I was sure they had.

Without a doubt, I doubted

the wrong things, and certainly

should have had no certainties–

including the certainty that doubt

was the most honest position.

Single-minded when the option

of being in two minds might

have been less touch and go,

there were so many opportunities

to be mistaken. Absolutely

there’ll be more dithering, but

what never happened may show whether

perhaps might yet become for sure–

there’ll be no choice about when.
